If you give pirates payday loans, do they pay them back? Is there honor among thieves? Apparently not, if recent goings on in Somali waters are any indication.
Are there still pirates in the 21st Century? Yes.
Yes, pirates still exist!
Much like the seafaring buccaneers of old, the modern rendition are just as violent. On November 18, an Indian navy vessel struck a blow for safe trading waters when it took down a band of pirates that had been harassing ships.
What led to this is that the ship MV Jag Arnav was nearly hijacked by what may be the same Somalian pirates around November 11. The Indian navy ship sunk the pirates’ vessel in self defense.
The Indian navy sunk a fishing vessel
The pirate flag ship was actually a Thai fishing trawler – Ekawat Nava5 – that the Somali pirates had seized. The Indian navy boasted of sinking the vessel, and showed pictures of it in flames. Fourteen sailors from the Thai boat have been missing since that November 18th battle.
“The Indian navy assumed it was a pirate vessel because they may have seen armed pirates on board the boat which has been hijacked earlier,” said Noel Choong, head of International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting bureau that is located in Kuala Lumpur.
In a statement given on Wednesday, November 26, the Thai foreign ministry said it was looking into whether the Indian navy took the proper course of action.
Both Commander Nirad Sinha and Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta of India’s navy defended the navy’s actions. Their claim is that the Indian navy’s war machine INS Tabar — a heavily armed 400-foot ship — was acting in self-defense.
“Insofar as we are concerned, both its description and its intent were that of a pirate ship,” Sinha said. “Only after we were fired upon did we fire. We fired in self defense. There were gun-toting guys with RPGs on it.”
Piracy around Somalia is a growing problem
There have been 96 pirate attacks so far this year in Somali waters, and 39 ships have been hijacked. If many of them have access to rocket propelled grenades as those aboard the Ekawat Nava5 did, violent carnage will be the inevitable result, as naval units will be forced to respond with deadly force.

Piracy attacks in Somalia are becoming more common every day. Many of these pirates even believe that they are “defending their seas,” and claiming that “their fishing livelihood was being stolen by foreign commercial trolleys.” At least 13 ships are currently in their possession, which includes a Ukrainian ship that carried tanks and other heavy weapons. There must be something done to stop this horrendous ordeal.
Piracy is piracy. It doesn’t matter what the justification is; stealing from people is just plain wrong. I know the UN is stepping up enforcement, but the UN doesn’t have its own Navy. Couldn’t the US Navy break off a destroyer or two from the Persian Gulf to take care of these jerks?
Wow didn’t know they still existed! But stealing is stealing and consequences come along one way or another. Why can’t we or haven’t we taken them down?
